Born to Drum

May 23, 2013

Frank Gibson Jr AS 200954Imagine making your debut as a professional musician at the age of eight, the venue is the Auckland Town Hall – and you are sharing the bill with the city’s leading female impersonator …

It happened in September, 1954 – and nearly 50 years later Frank Gibson Jr is as busy as ever. His website has downloadable musical examples and a biography, while the New Zealand Musician site has a recent interview done by Gordon Marr. The review is from the Auckland Star, 20 September 1954 – note the musicians also on that night: Frank Gibson Sr, Bobby Griffiths, Jim Warren, and the drag act Noel McKay. (The latter was good with or without his clothes, reported the Star.)

Below is a picture of Frank Jr (right) with his father Frank Gibson Sr. They are flanking the US drumming legend Louis Bellson. The image is from the MySpace page of the shop opened by Frank Sr, Drum City.
