A few months ago Reuben Schrader wrote a generous mention of Blue Smoke on the National Library’s web newsletter. The book, he said, reminds you “that long before nana had her hip replaced, nana was hip.”
He featured some great images from the Turnbull Library, among them this one that didn’t make the book. It shows five members of the Dixieland Jazz Orchestra, presumably from Wanganui because it was taken by the local Tesla Studios. (There were many, many bands called the Dixieland, also many great musicians from Wanganui: as I keep saying, from Douglas Lilburn to Pem Sheppard to Merv Thomas to Johnny Devlin … to Ruia Aperahama.
