Walking the streets of Wellington in recent years has often been like mingling with ghosts. Old venues and music stores disappear, and the people who worked in them, but their memories remain long after monstrosities such as the late 1980s Majestic Tower obliterated the tangible evidence.
Melody Thomas of the weekly Wellington giveaway Capital Times showed a lot of initiative and energy turning these thoughts into a walking tour of the city’s music precinct, as it was c. 1950. The tour began on Mercer Street, near where I earned 90 cents an hour in my first job, opening letters for the Dominion. In the lift one day in the mid 1960s my 10-year-old brother encountered Simon Meihana, of Lou and Simon fame. He came back beaming with excitement at the warm hello he got from such a star.
